Background

The reform of the civil service system at the end of 2002 resulted in the establishment of the Department of Water Resources under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment. This department is a government agency with the primary mission of comprehensive water resource management. The Regional Water Resources Office 6 serves as the central regional office under the Department of Water Resources, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.

In 2017, the Head of the National Council for Peace and Order established the National Water Resources Office, transferring some of the responsibilities and personnel of the Department of Water Resources to it.

Through the dedication and commitment of the Department of Water Resources to propose legislation for the efficient and effective management of the country's water resources—in all dimensions of allocation, use, development, management, maintenance, restoration, conservation, and water rights—which will benefit public utilities and other public interests, the Water Resources Act B.E. 2561 (2018) was published in the Royal Gazette, Volume 135, Section 112 A, on December 28, 2018.

In 2022, the Department of Water Resources restructured its roles and responsibilities to ensure that official operations achieved their goals, guidelines, and operational plans efficiently, in line with and responsive to the 20-year National Strategy, the National Reform Plan, and the operational plan of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, as well as in accordance with the Water Resources Act B.E. 2561 (2018).
